Sailing is defined as an activity in which the sailor tends to propel a craft, such as a sailing ship, ice boat, windsurfer, sailboat, and kite surfer, on a surface of the water or on ice, and this is recognized as a part of navigation plans. The term sailing can either be classified into two different activities, such as for sport or for recreational purposes. Boating is also called as recreational sailing and such is described as the activity that can be made or performed during an individual’s leisure time and that involves the act of travelling using different kinds of boat or watercraft. Boating may also involve other sports activities like paddlesports, waterskiing, sailing, parasailing, regattas or racing, and fishing. The yacht can be used is various ways, such as for competitive sailing, such as dinghy racing and yacht racing; for lifestyle cruising or safe cruising, which involves travelling while sailing on a yacht; and the non-yachting use of the watercraft, such as shipping, operation of ferries, military applications, and commercial fishing. Cruising is also a term that refers to the act of people to make use of a boat specifically for their lifestyle purposes and that includes the act of living or staying on the watercraft for a long period of time as they travel from one destination to another to obtain satisfaction and pleasure. There are different forms of cruising namely the coastal cruising, blue-water cruising, expedition cruising, travel on cruise ships, daysailing, camp cruising or beach cruising, and seasonal cruising or commute cruising.

Some of the common parts of a watercraft or a boat includes the cabin trunk, port, starboard, hull, companionway, keel, tiller, transom, rudder, stern, cockpit, deck, and the bow.
